Too many students in our schools are struggling and failing to make progress because of one problem, they can’t read. But with one hour a week in Community HOPE, you can be part of changing the outcome for a young student in our community. Interested?
Community HOPE is a literacy mentoring program that brings volunteer mentors together with at-risk students in low-income neighborhoods. Each volunteer mentor spends one hour, one afternoon per week with a child. During this hour, the volunteer mentor is given a specific curriculum folder with tasks to accomplish with his/her assigned student. The curriculum includes reading, vocabulary practice, objective reinforcement activities and games.
We hope you’ll consider joining our band of brothers and sisters, working to pave a path to a brighter, more productive future for the children of North Raleigh.
We have two Community HOPE programs at the A.E. Finley YMCA. One is located in The Oaks community near Sanderson High School and the other serves the Raleigh Gardens community and is located at Providence Church on Glenwood Avenue.
Training required: Each mentor will be required to attend a one-hour training session with our Community HOPE directors at the beginning of the year. He/she will also need to complete an application, go through a background check, and complete a 45 minute online training on child abuse prevention.
Schedule: Community HOPE operates Monday through Thursday afternoons from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. beginning in September and lasting until the end of April. Each mentor will need to commit to one of these one-hour sessions, one afternoon per week. Your day of the week and time will stay the same for the entire school year. (If you cannot commit every week, but would still like to support this program, you could serve as a substitute mentor. If you are interested in being a substitute mentor, please let us know.)
